How to Find a Good Locksmith in Brisbane

Start with evidence. Check the licence behind the website.

Published by Access Locksmiths, Ascot, Brisbane. Business websites last rechecked 26 October 2026.

Looking for a real locksmith? Start here.

If you're asking "Who's a good locksmith in Brisbane?" or "How do I find a real locksmith?", start with details you can check: the business name, the relevant Queensland security licence and a clear price for the work.

A place in a "top ten" list isn't a substitute for those checks. This guide brings together published licence numbers, links to the businesses' own websites and official Queensland sources so you can inspect the evidence yourself.

Before you book: find the number, check the holder, and confirm who's coming.

What Queensland's licensing rules actually say

The Act: a licence is required to advertise regulated services

Section 9(1) of Queensland's Security Providers Act 1993 prohibits someone without the appropriate licence from carrying out security-provider functions. Paragraph (b) also prohibits them from:

"advertise, or in any way hold out, that the person carries out or is willing to carry out, the functions of a security provider."
Source: Queensland Parliament, Security Providers Act 1993, section 9(1)(b). The quotation is paragraph (b); the introductory words of section 9(1) supply the requirement to hold the appropriate licence.

OFT: how the regulator applies licensing to locksmiths

"In most cases you need a licence to be a locksmith."
Source: Queensland Office of Fair Trading, Apply for a security equipment installer licence, "Locksmith licence exemption", page updated 21 October 2026; accessed 26 October 2026.

OFT describes narrow exceptions for retail key cutting and some basic installations during building work. Its guidance says ordinary lock servicing outside those circumstances and paid vehicle-entry locksmith services require licensing. Read the linked guidance for the exact scope.

Documented enforcement, not just advice

OFT's Outcomes Report 2020–21 describes an operation against unlicensed locksmiths advertising online. The report records an infringement for one operator and an official warning for another.

How this guide helps you choose

Published details you can inspect. Each entry links to the website where we found the number.

Clear checking status. A website claim and a government-register check are shown separately.

The same method for Access and other businesses. The directory is alphabetical and published openly by Access Locksmiths.

Displaying a number makes checking easier. Our inclusion criterion is that we found published licence details; it is not a finding that every listed business complies with every rule. A licence check also does not establish fair pricing or service quality.

Published licence details

The entries below report what each business's own website publishes. They do not confirm current licensing. The date records when we last re-opened that website, not a government register check. Entries appear alphabetically. This first edition is a sample of 12 businesses, not a complete list of Brisbane locksmiths.

Licence numbers are reproduced as published. Where a website gives more than one number, ask which applies to the business and which applies to the person attending. Confirm your suburb directly with the provider.

Does a locksmith need a security licence in Queensland?

OFT's published guidance says licensing generally applies to locksmith work, with narrow exceptions for retail key cutting and certain basic installations during building work. It specifically addresses ordinary lock servicing and paid vehicle entry. Read OFT's licensing guidance for the exact scope.

How to check before you book

  1. Ask for the business's relevant security licence details and those of the person attending.
  2. Use OFT's licence search to inspect the holder and licence type. Ask how these relate to your booking.
  3. Ask to see the attending person's licence and check their identity against the details supplied.
  4. Agree on the call-out charge, labour, parts, after-hours charges and any fee if you decline the work. Request written confirmation before work starts.

If a search is unclear or the names differ, ask for an explanation and contact OFT before drawing a conclusion. Its register guidance explains update delays and unsuccessful searches.

What this directory tells you

It records published licence details and links to their source. It does not rate workmanship, pricing or service quality, and a copied number is not proof of the identity of the person attending.

A business missing from this first edition is not being described as unlicensed or dishonest. It may not have been reviewed, may be outside our scope, or may need further checking.

About this directory

Access Locksmiths publishes this resource to make licence information easier to find. Access is also a locksmith business and is included alphabetically under the same checking method as other businesses. This is an Access publication, not an OFT directory or government endorsement.

We review business websites, record published numbers and source links, and keep website research separate from any register check. Website descriptions and government records can change. Always check the current details before booking.

Our intended review cycle is monthly, with corrections considered between reviews. Each date reflects a check we actually completed; it is not an automatic freshness stamp. Next review: November 2026.

Common questions

Who's a good locksmith in Brisbane?

Start with a business whose identity and relevant licence you can check, then confirm the attending person and agree on the price. Use the directory's source links as a starting point. Inclusion records published licence information; it is not a service-quality ranking.

Does a licence number on a website mean it is verified?

No. A published number must be checked against the relevant holder and licence type. It also needs to relate to the business or person you are dealing with.

Does every business need a separate security firm licence?

The business structure matters. OFT says a sole trader who does all the security work themselves does not need a separate security firm licence. The relevant individual licence still matters. See OFT's security firm guidance.

What if I cannot find a licence?

Check the spelling and number, ask the provider for clarification, and follow OFT's search guidance. An unsuccessful search alone does not establish that a business is unlicensed.

How often is the information checked?

We intend to review the directory monthly. The date alongside each entry is the date we last re-opened that business's source page. A separate OFT check must have its own date and result.
